What would an Illegal Immigrant do to become a U.S. Citizen?

I’ve been going around Texas, meeting many wonderful people interested in solving the immigration issue we face in this country.  We’re all talking about it these days, but at this point, no one’s serious enough to “get involved” in something so controversial.  Of course, the Democrats are all over this, making promises as they normally do, to convince the Hispanic community that Democrats care and Republicans don’t.

It’s not that Republicans don’t care, because many of us do.  It’s that many Republicans don’t see the value in the Hispanic vote.  The look at the numbers today and say, “what’s in it for me?”  They study the numbers and come to the same conclusion, there’s not enough Hispanics voting in the Primary to make a difference.  Therefore, why step out on a limb to develop a solution, when they might risk alienating their base by appearing to be sympathetic towards many in the Hispanic community.

Many Republican voters don’t actually understand what’s taking place.  They think, “what difference does it make if candidates try to solve the problems of millions of illegal immigrants…they don’t even vote.”  And they would be correct.  They don’t vote, but their family members do, and we know how big Hispanic families are.

You see, that’s the missing link.  Many Republicans are going along saying negative things about illegal immigrants, not realizing we’re being judged by our fellow Hispanic citizens , who do vote.

I have an uncle named Ernest.  When I was young, there were a few times when the family needed to pull together.  We all helped each other out.  I went to him afterward and thanked him for all his hard work.  He said, “That’s OK mijo, blood’s thicker than mud.”  And he’s right.  We would do anything for our family, and that’s what we need to start thinking whenever we talk about illegal immigrants.  Sure, right now, they can’t vote, but one day, they might.  And you can bet, families stick together and remember who was there for them.

Based on these principles, we must find a way through the forest.  We must develop solutions.  But what would work?  What would American voters approve?

Here are a few thoughts on five topics that continue to rise in discussions I have with other activists.

1. No one who is here illegally should be allowed to gain citizenship before anyone who applied and is waiting in their native country.

2. Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to partake in ANY government hand-outs such as medial care, food stamps, housing assistance or anything paid for by American taxpayers.

3. Anyone living in America illegally should pay a fine before consideration of any documentation plan.

4. Anyone living in America illegally should be able to prove they can earn a living and provide for their family before consideration of any documentation plan.

5. Anyone living in America illegally should be automatically deported if they have been convicted of a felony.

Would an illegal immigrant be willing to subject themselves to a background check?  Would they be willing to pay a fine?  Are they willing to give up the “freebies” in order to obtain legal status? (not citizenship)

As Presidential Candidate, Newt Gingrich has stated, we are not going to deport 12 Million illegal immigrants.  If that’s the general consensus, then doesn’t it make sense that we develop a plan to integrate them and allow them to come out of the shadows?  In truth, it’s a security issue.  We need to know who’s living among us.  We need to know who’s driving on our streets.  We need to know if our neighborhoods are safe.

Gingrich described a certain demographic within the illegal population.  Those who have lived in this country for twenty-five years or more, and have paid their taxes and stayed out of trouble, should be allowed to participate in a program that would document them and make them legal.  They can contribute to society, pay taxes and live a normal life, unafraid and proud to be here.

Sounds like a starting point, but in my opinion, twenty-five years is too long.  I think if a person has been living in this country for ten years and has provided for his family, stayed out of trouble and not “taken” from the taxpayers, then they should be offered the same option.  This way, the young illegal immigrant who came over with his family ten years ago, and is now about to graduate, can become a documented resident.  They can go to college and get a job afterward, and not have to fake documents to survive.

I know many in our Party think this is a sign of weakness.  They think we should not allow a program like this to happen, but I would remind them of the Simpson-Mazzoli Act, enacted by Ronald Reagan, who said, “The problem of illegal immigration should not, therefore, be seen as a problem between the United States and its neighbors. Our objective is only to establish a reasonable, fair, orderly, and secure system of immigration into this country and not to discriminate in any way against particular nations or people.”

Obama Slaps Catholics in the Face

It doesn’t matter how much damage control the Obama Administration does to undo what they did last week, nothing will change the fact they forcefully imposed their will on the Catholic Church and others, by mandating the church violate its core principles by providing birth control pills and contraceptives to all employees of religious based hospitals across the country.

It’s another phase of Obama Care, the “health care” program he promised everyone when he ran for President. Well, what do you think of it now? If you’re one of the many Hispanics who voted for Barak Obama, how does it feel knowing you put a man in office who is forcing many churches to throw away everything they know?

It may have sounded good in theory, and what could be wrong with everyone getting “free” health care?  Obama said we would no longer have people unable to get the care they need if Obama Care passed.  And it did pass…despite the efforts of the Republican Party to block it.

It’s the oldest trick in the book, called “bait and switch.” The first step is to bait the “hook” and convince the people this medical care takeover is really something they want.   They make it seem irresistible, showing pictures of the elderly and children getting the care they deserve.  All for free.  But is it free?  Nothing’s free in life… somewhere, there’s a “catch.”

And this is the “switch.”  Instead of getting what you thought you’d be getting, you get something different.  Finally, you get a chance to understand exactly what it means to be “mandated” to do something.  You get to see what it means to not have a choice…like the people in Socialist countries.

To the millions of Hispanics who voted for Obama because you thought he would fix immigration, he hasn’t. To the millions of Hispanics who voted for Obama because you thought he would create jobs…he hasn’t done that either.

And now, this? Who does he think he is? What makes him think he knows what’s best for you?

You may not be one of those who thinks the President is trying to destroy this nation from within, but ask yourself, what is the one thing that must be done in order to destroy America? Great leaders of foreign nations have always known that our nation’s greatest asset is the faith its people have in God. The same God that guided the hands of our forefathers still watches over us today.

Because of our faith, we are feared as a people. Because we rally when the Liberals attack Christmas, and we pull together in tragic times, our enemies cannot break us. But, if they can take us apart from within, they can do it while we attend our kid’s soccer games and go to work each day…oblivious to the danger at hand.

Our enemies know they must destroy our faith and will to fight. They must take away our faith in God and replace it with faith in the government. That’s where we’re all headed. People didn’t believe Obama Care would actually take place, but parts of it are already unfolding.

Rationing, End of Life counseling and now mandating that our churches abide by the government’s rules for providing contraception to its employees? It’s like a slap in the face to the Catholic Church. It is like kicking the Pope and pushing Cardinals around. Why? Because Obama doesn’t respect the church. He doesn’t understand people of faith. He doesn’t even place his hand over his heart when he says the Pledge of Allegiance.

If you voted for Barak Obama, it’s OK…you can’t change the past. But you can have an effect on the future. When November 2012 comes around, you can send him a message. Tell him that he can take his mandate and tear it up. We don’t need him telling us what to do.

In the past, the Catholic Church has always been neutral in the political arena, but today, it’s under attack. Recently, I read a letter from the Bishop of the Austin Diocese. It was a letter of distress, calling on all Catholics to pray for the Lord’s intervention and urged people to get involved politically to end this nightmare. Will you answer the call and ensure the Obama Administration’s agenda is stopped? Or will you just let someone else deal with it?

The “gig’s” up. Obama’s gotta go!

Meeting in Dallas!

The perception minorities have of the Republican Party is something we must overcome if we are to ever connect with the people.  For decades, Democrats have positioned us as the rich White guys who don’t care about the average person.  But we’re not all White…and we’re not all rich.  They think we’re money hungry lawyers, bankers and professionals who don’t know what it’s like to struggle.  Wrong again.  They’ve been told that to vote for a Republican is to vote against your people.

Tonight I’ll be speaking with the Dallas County Republican Party Outreach Committee, a meeting arranged shortly after a one-on-one visit with Dallas GOP Chairman, Wade Emmert.  We met at a Starbucks in Cedar Hill and visited for a few hours about the future of the Dallas County Republican Party.

I interviewed him, then he interviewed me, both learning each other’s motives and ideas for growing the Party.  In the end, we both concluded that collaboration and unification could have a tremendous impact not only in the community, but the Party would also benefit from the tangible difference it made through outreach efforts.

For decades, Democrats have been on the front lines, “helping” the underprivileged find their way to all the government hand-outs they can muster.  It’s led the community into a trap.  Now, 30 years later, we see generations of welfare families stacked on each other, unable to escape. I look forward to meeting the members of the Outreach Committee, who have chosen to be in the trenches.  We will talk about our education initiative, Stepping Stones, and how we can impact the local community through volunteer efforts of dedicated Dallas County Republicans who see the future and choose to play a role in its development.  They choose to give their free time to help others, and will be on the front lines in the battle to keep Texas Red!

Hispanics and the Redistricting “Hype”

The nation is looking at Texas to see how things shake-up regarding redistricting.  Our Hispanic population surged in the last ten years, and because the law requires equal representation, Hispanic communities and regions are up for grabs.  It reminds me of the game where a person stands in a glass closet and tries to catch money blowing around.  They can grab all the cash they can before their 30 seconds is up.

Is that what we’re all about?  Seizing the opportunity to claim territory in high Hispanic regions?  Democrats are fighting for Hispanics like we were pieces of gold, whose statistics, whether legal or illegal, equates to millions of dollars from the federal government.  Sounds like a field day for Democrats, who are experts at getting “theirs.”  I can only imagine how they’re already spending the money.

Republicans have an issue with redistricting because they know Hispanics traditionally vote with Democrats, and they see it as a loss.  Recently, Attorney General Abbott struck a deal with several “Hispanic Rights” groups, giving them two new districts in heavily Hispanic regions.  Take a look at the groups we’re dealing with -  Texas LULAC, MALDEF, GI Forum, The Mexican American Bar Association of Texas, La Fe Policy Research and Education Center, Hispanics Organized for Political Education (HOPE), the National Organization for Mexican American Rights, Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, the William C. Velasquez Institute, Southwest Workers’ Union, and other plaintiffs collectively known as the “Texas Latino Redistricting Task Force.”   Don’t you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?  In the end, the deal-making wasn’t enough.

Who’s involved in the “Texas Latino Redistricting Task Force?”  A bunch of Special Interest groups jockeying for their piece of the pie?  Why are they fighting so hard?  What’s in it for them?  I can’t believe they are going through all this for no reason.  They’re up to something, and it stinks.

We Republicans want these districts, but if somehow we got them, would we be able to keep them?  It’s time to ask some tough questions.  Have we been doing enough to include the growing Hispanic population in our Party?  Do Hispanics identify with our Party?  Do they vote Republican?  When we break it down in simple terms, it’s easy to see why we do not have any traction with the community.

We, as a Party, have only pandered to Hispanics, calling on them when we need the votes.  Now, we must have more than rhetoric.  We need solutions and leadership to open new doors and embrace conservative Hispanics.  If we do this, then it doesn’t matter how the districts are split.  Either way you cut it, we should have the message that wins, and the platform that resonates.  In time, with hard work and perseverance, we will prevail.  Key word…”work.”  Without it, we’re just going in circles, fooling each other.

“King of Class Warfare”

We’ve been told by politicians that we deserve a “fair shake” in life.  We’ve heard it for so long, many in the middle and lower class have begun to believe they are entitled to it, that it’s their “turn” to have the advantage.

Most people think a fair shake is a good thing.  They think, “Why should I pay 30% of my taxes while I’m still struggling, trying to succeed, and the millionaires get away with paying a lower percentage than me?”  They don’t think it’s right, and I agree.  But that’s the tax system we have, and the business owners of America know it and take advantage of it.  Until we do something about it, nothing will change.

But, before we get swayed into thinking we need to kick everyone out of Washington, let’s dig a little deeper.  Let’s ask a few questions to those of us in the Middle Class.  This is how I describe the middle class:  We are either single, married, with kids or without, some education, willingness to work for what we want and we’re still working to achieve those things.  We worry about paying our bills and at times have extra money to “catch-up” on things.  We have kids in school, pay our taxes and love our families.

There are a lot of us.  We sometimes work two jobs, and cut back when we need to.  And the lower class is having a harder time.  They love their families just as much, but for one reason or another, weren’t able to get an education, or maybe they took one too many gambles and now they’re coming back up.  The lower class work jobs that don’t pay much.  They are always thinking about the next check and the next electric bill.  Many times, they choose between paying for food or a utility bill.  Many of them are on some sort of government assistance program to make ends meet, and many have a dream to one day own a home and have a successful career.

It’s easy to see why the phrase “Fair Shake” resonates with us.  When we see Illegal immigrants taking our hard earned money, it bothers us.  Why do we have to pay more to provide ESL classes for the huge surge in illegal immigration from Mexico?  We don’t think it’s fair that we have to struggle, yet they buy new trucks and homes, using our money to do it. Our government doesn’t even have to verify citizenship in most cases…in fact, we can’t even ask them.

In my opinion, President Obama is the “King of Class Warfare,” playing the game like a pro.  He wants everyone to have a fair shake, But that’s not really what’s happening.  The truth is, there are more people taking advantage of our system than ever before.  A “Fair Shake” is really a “hand-out.”

I was talking to a hardcore Democrat a few nights ago.  He tried to explain to me that all he wanted was a fair shake.  I said, “And what is a fair shake?  If you want a fair shake, then that means you want to level the playing field.  If that’s the case, then everyone starts on the same line.”

“No,” he immediately responded.  “They (top 1%) already have the advantage.  I want to have the advantage. “  I replied, “So then you don’t want a fair shake, you want a head start.  How “fair” is that?”

Since the Democrats try to play the “code word” game on us, here’s one for them.  In a nutshell, “Fair Shake” is codeword for “Unfair Advantage”…they think they’re “owed.”  This is why the Democrat Party is so dangerous.  Their goal is to keep people wanting more…like an addict.  The more you need the government, the stronger your loyalty.  They want to keep the lid on the middle class and shut the door on the lower class.

In contrast, the Republican Party is wide open.  We want people to achieve more and take less.  Our vision is one of self advancement.  You make your own breaks.  Like my mother always told me, “Some people let things happen, and other people make things happen.”  We make things happen, and the Democratic lid is about to be blown off the middle and lower class.  First comes enlightenment then comes empowerment.

How do you do Hispanic Outreach without Discussing Immigration/Border?

I’m just about frustrated with the lack of messaging our Party has developed to position us as the Party that’s solving problems.  Hispanics are the hot topic these days, and once again, it’s coming down to votes.  It makes me wonder if there’s a plan at all.

On our Party’s official Hispanic Outreach website, which by the way, opens in Spanish translation, has an issues tab.  I clicked it to see what the Party thought about these explosive issues.  I couldn’t believe what I saw, and immediately recognized exactly why it is we’re making no real progress.

Here are the “Issues”: Economy, National Defense, Courts, Education, Energy, Health Care.

Notice any major issues missing?  No mention of Immigration or Border Security.  No mention of the massive problem we face as a community.  No mention of how we can position ourselves as the Party to solve these issues.  For some reason, the “powers that be,”  at the RNC have made the decision to omit anything relating to immigration/border security.  Doesn’t it seem strange that we would attempt to connect but fail to provide substance?  What is the position of the Party?  To hide and duck?  That’s what it looks like to me, and I’m sure that’s how it looks to anyone else who visits the RNC’s “social media” strategy.

On January 11th of this year, the RNC has named Bettina Inclán as the Director of Hispanic Outreach. Bettina is the former Executive Director of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly and has served on numerous campaigns at the national, state and local level.  Inclan mentioned that “…the Latino outreach is nothing new and that the RNC would reach out even more to Hispanics through social media.”

And that’s what worries me.  How can we be serious about making huge strides through a National Hispanic Outreach initiative, and think this is “nothing new?”  Everything’s new.  The game is different, and so are the rules.

What if?

Depending on your background and what you have achieved to date, the future can mean many things.  To the struggling family, unable to keep up, the future is a nightmare.  And to those with means, who have achieved financial success, the future is filled with opportunities.

It doesn’t matter which category you’re in, how we handle the next eight years will define our country for the next one hundred years.

A few years ago, many of us knew nothing of Hispanic population trends and how we Hispanics will become the Majority in Texas by 2020.  But today, our Presidential debates begin with questions on immigration and border security, two issues at the core of the Hispanic community.  At a time when we (Republicans) are just beginning to realize the importance of harnessing the potential of the Hispanic community, the Democrat Party is hiring PAID staff to open “Promesa” offices on college campuses across the state of Texas.

Promesa…Promise in English.  What promises are they making?  Who knows, but while our Party sits and waits, leaving it to grassroots organizations to figure things out themselves, opportunity is slipping away.  How will we be able to compete?  Our message?  If it was just about the message, Hispanics would have already become Republicans, but it’s not.

Democrats have been working in Hispanic communities for decades, helping the underprivileged survive by connecting them to the proper agency to assist them.  They are in the churches, at the soccer games and in the Hispanic Chambers.  They work closely with LULAC, who has always been perceived as loyal to the Democrat Party.  Of course, now, they dominate the Hispanic communities and the people are being conditioned to “take.”  “You deserve that money,” they say.  I’ve heard others say, “Well, if the Government is going to give the money away, then it’s not wrong.”  Dependency is more powerful than fear.  Eventually, people vote to keep their benefits, and the Candidate that tells them what they want to hear, gets elected.

I was talking with a fellow Republican yesterday about what it would take to get the Hispanic Community to recognize they held the same values as our Party.  I replied, “Before you start thinking of ways to bring Hispanics to the Party, you have to make sure it’s safe for them to jump.  Why would we want to send Hispanics to our local Republican Party office, when we know from personal experience how they will be received?  Until we have a Party that stands at the door with open arms, Hispanics will not leave the Democrat Party.”

Loyalty is a powerful characteristic, and Hispanics take pride in loyalty.

Personally, I know there are many Republican Leaders who understand what’s at stake.  I know there are good people in the Party who want to see the Party take on a new approach.  We need a grand vision, a game plan that utilizes the willingness and ability of millions of Hispanics across the country working on common issues, united.

What if the Republican Party had an eight year plan…the time it will take for Hispanics to become the Majority in Texas.  We could organize our members, use Party tools like Voter vault, contact Hispanic Republicans and take the Party to the community.  What if we helped students graduate and find their way to college or technical school.  We could help them get those high-paying jobs that we say are coming. They will become our newest contributors to society, buying homes, cars, and raising children to be patriots.

It’s prosperity.  Everyone wants it, but not everyone knows how to get it.  If our Party focused on proactive efforts to make a long-term real impact, the people would see action over rhetoric, which would diminish the negative image Democrats have been projecting for years. It’s a two-way street.  Yes, Hispanics must be willing to become involved, but the “Establishment” must be willing to embrace them when they come.
