“No Show” Joe

When a candidate avoids the public and will not answer questions from the people, they do not deserve the honor of serving the people.  Several weeks ago, we decided to partner with Newstalk 1230 to bring McLennan County a much needed primary debate between three highly anticipated races, including Texas House of Representatives District 56, McLennan County Sheriff and the Republican Party County Chairman.

Immediately, we heard positive response from Parnell McNamara and Randy Plemons, Candidates for McLennan County Sheriff.  Within a day or two, we had confirmation from Doc Anderson, Incumbent, District 56 and shortly after, his challenger, Chris DeCluitt agreed to debate.

Ralph Patterson, Candidate for Republican Chairman of McLennan County also agree to participate, leaving one last hold-out… current County Chairman, Joe B. Hinton.  Hinton, who has been using the McLennan County Republican Club to grandstand and push his message unopposed, has yet to respond.  He was notified in the same email that went out to all candidates.

Why does he not want to debate Ralph Patterson?  What is he afraid of?  Maybe he thinks he has this in the bag, and just doesn’t want to make a critical mistake?  Or maybe he realizes he can’t face Ralph Patterson.  Squaring off with Patterson in a one-on-one would create the environment where Hinton would have to answer for his actions, which he obviously feels he does not need to subject himself to.

Like the Democrat, Liberal who’s afraid to attend a Town Hall meeting, and possibly face the music of his actions, Hinton is in hiding.  He was invited to speak at the McLennan County Republican Women’s Club meeting last month and failed to appear.  But, when you never attend their meetings in the first place, it’s tough to show your face and ask for support.

Hinton is a victim of his own actions.  In many circles, even the “establishment” realizes his time is coming to an end.  I’ve been told by some close to him, that they realize he is not living up to the job as Chairman, and it is time for new leadership.  His tight reign is slipping, and based on the reactions of many in the McLennan Party, so is his support.

I respect those who have agreed to participate in this debate.  They understand the importance of connecting with the people, and understand the value of a debate.  But, if you’re the weaker candidate, facing off with your stronger opponent is just a nightmare waiting to happen.  So what do most people in that situation do?  Nothing.  They hide behind anything and anyone they can, making excuses and dancing around long enough to get to the election.  Maybe…just maybe, they’ve fooled enough people to win an election.

But those days are over.  Now, the voters are aware, and any candidate who isn’t willing to stand firm in front of the people are perceived as cowards.  If they don’t have the courage to speak directly to the people and answer tough questions, sharing their vision, then we don’t want ‘em.

I guess it’s not too late, but I won’t hold my breath to hear from Joe B. Hinton, my County Chairman who does not speak to me or anyone of us associated with GOPisForMe or the Hispanic Republican Club of the County he Chairs.  It’s embarrassing, to be quite frank.  I have had the pleasure of working with cooperative County Chairmen, and I do know how good it can be…with the right person at the helm.  What we have in McLennan County is a joke…and it is time for new leadership.  Perhaps the Republican voters in McLennan County feel the same?  We’ll soon find out.

Navarro County Republican Outreach Efforts in Full Swing

It was a cold, rainy day in Corsicana, TX.  Republican Candidates from Navarro County gathered at the I.O.O.F. Event Center to meet local voters and speak to the crowd about their candidacy.  The event, sponsored by the newly formed Hispanic Republican Club of Navarro County, featured a prayer for guidance from Raul Jimenez, an incredible Hispanic Outreach recap from Chairman, Frank Steed and presentation from Duke Machado, Director- GOPisForMe.  Fourteen candidates then took the stage, one at a time, and gave their best three-minute “pitch” for why they deserve the vote of the people in Navarro County.  From  Sheriff’s Candidates to County Commissioners, we heard many great ideas and met several wonderful patriots.  The videos below include one of Chairman, Frank Steed and one of Duke Machado.  Steed gives a detailed recap of the process required and effort it took for the Hispanic movement to take hold.

Machado spoke about the Hispanic Republican movement and had an incredible opportunity to connect with the many candidates in attendance.  The message is growing in Navarro County, thanks to the leadership of passionate Republicans like Ralph Gonzalez, Raul and Monica Jimenez, Johnny Gonzales and their growing team in Navarro.  We will post Candidate’s speeches soon.

Meeting in Dallas!

The perception minorities have of the Republican Party is something we must overcome if we are to ever connect with the people.  For decades, Democrats have positioned us as the rich White guys who don’t care about the average person.  But we’re not all White…and we’re not all rich.  They think we’re money hungry lawyers, bankers and professionals who don’t know what it’s like to struggle.  Wrong again.  They’ve been told that to vote for a Republican is to vote against your people.

Tonight I’ll be speaking with the Dallas County Republican Party Outreach Committee, a meeting arranged shortly after a one-on-one visit with Dallas GOP Chairman, Wade Emmert.  We met at a Starbucks in Cedar Hill and visited for a few hours about the future of the Dallas County Republican Party.

I interviewed him, then he interviewed me, both learning each other’s motives and ideas for growing the Party.  In the end, we both concluded that collaboration and unification could have a tremendous impact not only in the community, but the Party would also benefit from the tangible difference it made through outreach efforts.

For decades, Democrats have been on the front lines, “helping” the underprivileged find their way to all the government hand-outs they can muster.  It’s led the community into a trap.  Now, 30 years later, we see generations of welfare families stacked on each other, unable to escape. I look forward to meeting the members of the Outreach Committee, who have chosen to be in the trenches.  We will talk about our education initiative, Stepping Stones, and how we can impact the local community through volunteer efforts of dedicated Dallas County Republicans who see the future and choose to play a role in its development.  They choose to give their free time to help others, and will be on the front lines in the battle to keep Texas Red!

Duke Machado on 55 KTSA, San Antonio

This morning at 10:30, I was interviewed by Jack Riccardi, host of the Jack Riccardi Show (Gang of Four) on 55 KTSA.  He has hosted midday, nighttime and special events talk shows for 550 KTSA since July 1999.  Jack’s a native of Boston, magna cum laude graduate of Boston University with a degree in journalism, and worked in music radio in Boston and New England throughout the ’80s. “Talkers” magazine annually lists him as of of “America’s Most Influential Talk Show Hosts”.
We talked about the Administration’s attempt to force the Catholic Church into providing abortion related treatments in hospitals that receive Federal money.  We also discussed the Republican Party and the efforts to reach the Hispanic community.  Riccardi ran across one of my blogs titled, “No Need to Fear Hispanic Republicans.”  It was a great opportunity to expand the reach of our message and connect to thousands of listeners.

“King of Class Warfare”

We’ve been told by politicians that we deserve a “fair shake” in life.  We’ve heard it for so long, many in the middle and lower class have begun to believe they are entitled to it, that it’s their “turn” to have the advantage.

Most people think a fair shake is a good thing.  They think, “Why should I pay 30% of my taxes while I’m still struggling, trying to succeed, and the millionaires get away with paying a lower percentage than me?”  They don’t think it’s right, and I agree.  But that’s the tax system we have, and the business owners of America know it and take advantage of it.  Until we do something about it, nothing will change.

But, before we get swayed into thinking we need to kick everyone out of Washington, let’s dig a little deeper.  Let’s ask a few questions to those of us in the Middle Class.  This is how I describe the middle class:  We are either single, married, with kids or without, some education, willingness to work for what we want and we’re still working to achieve those things.  We worry about paying our bills and at times have extra money to “catch-up” on things.  We have kids in school, pay our taxes and love our families.

There are a lot of us.  We sometimes work two jobs, and cut back when we need to.  And the lower class is having a harder time.  They love their families just as much, but for one reason or another, weren’t able to get an education, or maybe they took one too many gambles and now they’re coming back up.  The lower class work jobs that don’t pay much.  They are always thinking about the next check and the next electric bill.  Many times, they choose between paying for food or a utility bill.  Many of them are on some sort of government assistance program to make ends meet, and many have a dream to one day own a home and have a successful career.

It’s easy to see why the phrase “Fair Shake” resonates with us.  When we see Illegal immigrants taking our hard earned money, it bothers us.  Why do we have to pay more to provide ESL classes for the huge surge in illegal immigration from Mexico?  We don’t think it’s fair that we have to struggle, yet they buy new trucks and homes, using our money to do it. Our government doesn’t even have to verify citizenship in most cases…in fact, we can’t even ask them.

In my opinion, President Obama is the “King of Class Warfare,” playing the game like a pro.  He wants everyone to have a fair shake, But that’s not really what’s happening.  The truth is, there are more people taking advantage of our system than ever before.  A “Fair Shake” is really a “hand-out.”

I was talking to a hardcore Democrat a few nights ago.  He tried to explain to me that all he wanted was a fair shake.  I said, “And what is a fair shake?  If you want a fair shake, then that means you want to level the playing field.  If that’s the case, then everyone starts on the same line.”

“No,” he immediately responded.  “They (top 1%) already have the advantage.  I want to have the advantage. “  I replied, “So then you don’t want a fair shake, you want a head start.  How “fair” is that?”

Since the Democrats try to play the “code word” game on us, here’s one for them.  In a nutshell, “Fair Shake” is codeword for “Unfair Advantage”…they think they’re “owed.”  This is why the Democrat Party is so dangerous.  Their goal is to keep people wanting more…like an addict.  The more you need the government, the stronger your loyalty.  They want to keep the lid on the middle class and shut the door on the lower class.

In contrast, the Republican Party is wide open.  We want people to achieve more and take less.  Our vision is one of self advancement.  You make your own breaks.  Like my mother always told me, “Some people let things happen, and other people make things happen.”  We make things happen, and the Democratic lid is about to be blown off the middle and lower class.  First comes enlightenment then comes empowerment.

What if?

Depending on your background and what you have achieved to date, the future can mean many things.  To the struggling family, unable to keep up, the future is a nightmare.  And to those with means, who have achieved financial success, the future is filled with opportunities.

It doesn’t matter which category you’re in, how we handle the next eight years will define our country for the next one hundred years.

A few years ago, many of us knew nothing of Hispanic population trends and how we Hispanics will become the Majority in Texas by 2020.  But today, our Presidential debates begin with questions on immigration and border security, two issues at the core of the Hispanic community.  At a time when we (Republicans) are just beginning to realize the importance of harnessing the potential of the Hispanic community, the Democrat Party is hiring PAID staff to open “Promesa” offices on college campuses across the state of Texas.

Promesa…Promise in English.  What promises are they making?  Who knows, but while our Party sits and waits, leaving it to grassroots organizations to figure things out themselves, opportunity is slipping away.  How will we be able to compete?  Our message?  If it was just about the message, Hispanics would have already become Republicans, but it’s not.

Democrats have been working in Hispanic communities for decades, helping the underprivileged survive by connecting them to the proper agency to assist them.  They are in the churches, at the soccer games and in the Hispanic Chambers.  They work closely with LULAC, who has always been perceived as loyal to the Democrat Party.  Of course, now, they dominate the Hispanic communities and the people are being conditioned to “take.”  “You deserve that money,” they say.  I’ve heard others say, “Well, if the Government is going to give the money away, then it’s not wrong.”  Dependency is more powerful than fear.  Eventually, people vote to keep their benefits, and the Candidate that tells them what they want to hear, gets elected.

I was talking with a fellow Republican yesterday about what it would take to get the Hispanic Community to recognize they held the same values as our Party.  I replied, “Before you start thinking of ways to bring Hispanics to the Party, you have to make sure it’s safe for them to jump.  Why would we want to send Hispanics to our local Republican Party office, when we know from personal experience how they will be received?  Until we have a Party that stands at the door with open arms, Hispanics will not leave the Democrat Party.”

Loyalty is a powerful characteristic, and Hispanics take pride in loyalty.

Personally, I know there are many Republican Leaders who understand what’s at stake.  I know there are good people in the Party who want to see the Party take on a new approach.  We need a grand vision, a game plan that utilizes the willingness and ability of millions of Hispanics across the country working on common issues, united.

What if the Republican Party had an eight year plan…the time it will take for Hispanics to become the Majority in Texas.  We could organize our members, use Party tools like Voter vault, contact Hispanic Republicans and take the Party to the community.  What if we helped students graduate and find their way to college or technical school.  We could help them get those high-paying jobs that we say are coming. They will become our newest contributors to society, buying homes, cars, and raising children to be patriots.

It’s prosperity.  Everyone wants it, but not everyone knows how to get it.  If our Party focused on proactive efforts to make a long-term real impact, the people would see action over rhetoric, which would diminish the negative image Democrats have been projecting for years. It’s a two-way street.  Yes, Hispanics must be willing to become involved, but the “Establishment” must be willing to embrace them when they come.

Save the Date: Feb 18th : Meet and Greet Your Navarro County Candidates

The Hispanic Republican Club of Navarro County is hosting a Candidate Meet and Greet to allow the many candidates in county, state and federal elections to visit with the local community.  This is a perfect example of how the Republican Party Chairman can collaborate with Hispanics to truly develop an aggressive approach to making contact with Hispanics.

This meeting will focus on issues relating to the Hispanic community as well as those affecting the community.  GOPisForMe will be presenting their Stepping Stones Education initiative and outlining ways Hispanics can get involved locally to improve their community.  We will review current trends in education and immigration, providing a new perspective on reaching out to Hispanics.  Hats off to Frank Steed, County Chairman, for his efforts.

We invite you to join us on January 30th, 2012 for our first Monthly Meeting for the Hispanic Republican Club of McLennan County.

With the political environment heating up, and Primaries in full stride, we are doing all we can to keep you informed about the candidates and races in McLennan County.

This month, we are honored to have Charles “Doc” Anderson, Texas House of Representatives District 56 as our guest speaker. He will speak on his recent trip to the border and how it affects us here in McLennan as well as discuss his views on the future of District 56.  We will also discuss the Commissioner’s, Sheriff’s and Texas House District 57 races, allowing candidates time to address the group.

Josh Tetens, Candidate for Texas House District 57 will also speak about his run for office and what some of the issues are as he sees them.

If you are a candidate and wish to speak, please call Duke Machado @ (254) 214-9368to be added to the agenda.

U.S. Attorney General Sets Tone for Border Non-Enforcement

We all know how local politics work.  We have county elections where we vote for Commissioners, Clerks, Sheriff, J.P.’s and District Attorneys. We can immediately see the results of our votes and the actions of our elected officials, which gives us peace in our decision.  As it relates to crime and safety of our community,  there’s one position that makes all the difference in the world…the District Attorney.

With a “bad” D.A., the local police force feels limited in their ability to enforce the law.  They can make arrests, but what for?  If the D.A. doesn’t feel the need to pursue criminals and in fact, works against the police officers, eventually you end up with an environment of distrust and uncertainty.

If I was a police officer, and had to apprehend someone who might be armed and dangerous, risking my life for the safety of the community, the last thing I need to worry about is whether or not I’m going to be persecuted for doing my job.  If I’m successful in subduing the criminal, can get them into the squad car and take them to jail, I want the criminal to be prosecuted and receive a proper punishment.

But, without a strong District Attorney, that criminal may never see a courtroom.  He may be allowed to leave the next day, scheduled for court in six months, then forgotten about.  Or, the criminal might have spoken to someone and decided to file suit against the arresting officer for “abuse” during the arrest.

The action or inaction from the D.A. determines the resolve of the police force.  If our police force feels they do not have the support of the D.A., then they just back-off, knowing they are better off to not get in trouble for doing their job.  In time, criminals gain the upper hand and the system is out of balance.  There is no leadership.

That’s where we are today with our U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder.  The man who supplied military grade assault weapons to Mexican Drug Cartels is now going after our own Border Patrol agents for doing their job and arresting Illegals who bring drugs into this country.  Recently, El Paso native Jesus “Chito” E. Diaz Jr. lost his career with the U.S. Border Patrol and ended up with a felony conviction after an encounter three years ago with a Mexican teenage drug smuggler on the South Texas border.  (Read Full Story)  Holder wouldn’t know how to act in any situation our Border Patrol agents face on a daily basis.  He doesn’t have a clue how difficult and dangerous it is for our guys to do their job.  When you factor in the positions of the Obama Administration and the actions of our Homeland Security guru…Janet Napolitano, we can expect our Border Patrol agents to begin taking on the same attitude that many local police have when they realize their D.A. doesn’t “have their back.”

The way I see it, our U.S. Attorney General sets the tone for other U.S. Attorneys to take action against Border Patrol Agents.  When you add it up, it’s like we’re the bad guys and the illegals are under U.S. protection.  Seriously??

You always hear Vets talk about the bond they had with their fellow soldiers.  They never left anyone behind, and would take a bullet trying to save one of their own.  But our Border Patrol do not have that kind of support.  Now, they have rules of engagement…similar to those of Vietnam, where our soldiers were limited in their ability to do their job.

We Republicans talk about securing the border, as if it’s something we all believe should be done, yet expect our Border Patrol to do their job with their hands tied behind their backs.  I can see it now.  Soon, we’ll only be able to stand in front of Illegals and try to stop them from walking forward.  Or, maybe we can talk nicely to them and let them know we’re sorry for asking them to not enter our country, but if they would be so kind as to allow us to place them in custody, we would be happy to give them an attorney, food, water and a nice comfy place to sleep.

No wonder we have major problems…our Attorney General makes us look like a bunch of pansies!
