Mission Minded Evangelism
“I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made” (Isaiah 43:6,7).
We never know when we meet someone, what that first meeting will ultimately lead to, and in most cases, we rarely see that person again. But when I first met Andrew Chavarrilla, Outreach Evangelist at the Westhill Church of Christ, in Corsicana,TX, I knew we’d be meeting again.
We met at an Immigration Forum, held in conjunction with the Hispanic Republican Club of Navarro County. Immigration Attorney, Garry Davis, came down from Dallas and talked to us about the Deferred Action program. Andrew was asking specific questions, and was extremely concerned with the dilemma illegal immigration is causing within the Hispanic community. I could tell he was aware of the critical situation.
As a Christian, he knows all people are children of God, regardless of where they were born, and it is this realization that drives him, as a Republican, to help people not only find peace in the Lord, but also help them improve their lives in other ways.
In conversations afterward, Andrew talked about the tremendous barrier we have with language, which inspired him to get his church involved with solving that problem by providing weekly ESL classes for the community. His program, Conexiones, is especially tailored to reach the Hispanic family unit and strengthen it.
In addition to the ESL classes being provided, Conexiones will be partnering with Stepping Stones, to help those students who need a little more than just a weekly tutor. Using the mentor-based Stepping Stones program, Andrew plans to maximize the effect on children in need of positive role models and mentors.
We at GOPisForMe are excited to be working with Andrew Chavarrilla and the Westhill Church of Christ, in our “pilot” program with their church organization. Through our experience, the Church will play a vital role in connecting with the Hispanic community, while building new relationships and trust.
