What would happen if Facebook went down, for good? With millions of users, worldwide, businesses, organizations and non-profits using Facebook on a daily basis, messages like this one get you thinking about how quickly our “communication portal” can become useless.
I remember the people who were slow to make the switch to cell phones, the same ones who don’t have a Facebook account, or if they do, they’ve got 18 friends. They always talked about how they’d rather be “in-touch” with their friends and family. They prefer to write letters and mail them. They’re the ones who have HAM radios and hand-crank multi-frequency radios.
They always say, “What would happen if one day there was no electricity? In this case, they associate it with the internet, but even the internet requires electricity.
Power, whether by coal, oil, natural gas, wind, solar or bio-fuels, is our life source. Without an ample supply, I hate to think of how quickly civilization could deteriorate.
By the time I’m done with this short reminder of how technology can become useless in a matter of seconds, Facebook will probably be back online and the “glitches” fixed.
But, what if it never came back? What if you had to start over? How would you do it? Where would you go? What if you didn’t have cash? What if cash was as useless as Facebook is this very second. What if the internet became monitored, or speech was no longer free? I know…I keep talking about the “what if’s,” but it’s a reality we must all face and prepare for.
I guess Facebook going down reminds me of one more reason to vote for Mitt Romney…I can’t see Mitt Romney allowing this country to put its citizens through those conditions. I believe he would ensure policies were in place that prohibited a collapse of our economy, unlike the course our current President has put us on.
Guess I should post this to Google+.
