Waco Police Association Endorses Judge Steve Smith for Chief Justice
BRYAN, TX – At its’ March 12th meeting, the Waco Police Association officially endorsed Judge Steve Smith in his effort to defeat incumbent 10th Court of Appeals Chief Justice Tom Gray in the May 29th Republican Primary election. The endorsement includes a $1,000.00 contribution to Judge Smith’s campaign. Smith said he believes Gray lacks the judicial temperament needed inside and outside of the courtroom and that this endorsement is another example of the fact that he has lost the faith and confidence of the public.
“Justice Gray was publicly admonished by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct for lapses in judgment, including the entering and searching through of the other justices’ private offices without their knowledge or permission,” said Smith. “As judges, we must hold ourselves to a higher standard. Even the appearance of impropriety is unacceptable because it undermines public confidence in an impartial judiciary.”
The Waco Police Association represents more than 230 officers and retirees of the Waco Police Department. It was formed to give local police officers and their families a voice in electing people to all levels of public office who support the law enforcement community and issues pertaining to public safety.
Smith has had a long and distinguished legal career including service as a municipal judge, county court at law judge, and as an attorney in private practice in addition to his current service as a district judge. He is a past Chair of the Judicial Section of the State Bar of Texas, and is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a distinction held by only 1.5% of all attorneys licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
